1% Can Change the World

It doesn't take a lot to change the world. With as little as 1% of your yearly income you could help end global poverty or reverse the environmental impact of consumerism. For most of us, giving just $1 out of every $100 we earn won't make a noticeable difference to our own standard of living, but when put together with the donations of others our $1 can truly change the world!

My 1 Percent is a community that exists to help individuals reverse their environmental impact and save the planet. It is launching this month, October 2009, and will help you donate a portion of your yearly income to a network of environmentally focused non-profit organisations.

One of the features of My 1 Percent that I really love is that you can set yourself an annual donation goal and track your progress against it. You can make one off donations or set up recurring donations - which will make achieving your annual goal easier.

A Garbage Patch Bigger than Texas!

In the middle of the pacific ocean there is a toxic garbage patch more than twice the size of Texas. Lindsey Hoshaw, a recent Stanford journalism graduate now working as a freelance environmental journalist, is preparing for a month long voyage to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to take photos for a New York Times article.

The report aims to educate the public about marine debris. It will bring new light to ocean pollution and provide one of the first reports about how toxic chemicals are entering our food chain. Many scientists believe that ocean pollution will be one of the most pressing issues of the 21st century, this slideshow will be one of the first to show direct footage from the Garbage Patch.

Help Turn the Tide on Global Deforestation

The "Replant The Rainforests" pilot program is launching this year! Created by the Eco Preservation Society, the pilot program's goal is to raise $1 Million by April 25th, 2009 to begin the process of creating Sustainably Managed, Permanent Rainforest Habitats around the world and to prepare for the launch of the 2010 ten year goal program, "Turning The Tide".

Sponsorship funds raised during the 2009 pilot program support the following Sustainably Managed, Permanent Rainforest Habitat projects:

Project: Reforesting Costa Rica's Playa El Rey - Cause: Saving Mono Titi

Project: Borneo Reforestation - Cause: Habitat for Displaced Orangutans

Project: Belize Plantation Reforestation - Cause: Save the Jaguar
